Tom Gentile had a strong desire to learn something new about making concrete blocks when he worked with his father in 1930, during the great depression, in Schenectady, New York. He had ambition and an active imagination and so, in 1955 he set up business in Colonie, New York on a piece of vacant farm land next to the railroad tracks. He cleared the land and asked some of his friends from Schenectady to help him build a factory. He often worked from sun up to sun down building a plant and installing a machine that makes blocks. Finally, the first concrete block was made on June 14th, 1956.
Tom’s daughter, Marlene, joined the family business in 1966 and earned a degree in accounting which she still uses today managing the business. Colonie Block prospered and became known as the one concrete block manufacturer in the area, that consistently manufactures high quality concrete blocks. It still has this reputation today. The Company added septic tanks and drywells to their line in the early 1970′s and continues to manufacture a complete line of precast products at competitive prices.
